New Campbeltown Distilleries

The town of Campbeltown, at the tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, once rivalled Speyside as a center of Scottish distilling. In the late 19th century, there were around 30 distilleries operating simultaneously. By the early decades of the 20th century, only two remained; much-celebrated Springbank, and Glen Scotia, which has typically maintained a lower profile. In recent years, Springbank and Glen Scotia have been joined by Glengyle–sold as Kilkerran–produced by the same group that owns Springbank.

Now, Spirits Business reports that at least two new distilleries have gained planning approval in Campbeltown. Most recently, there’s Dal Riata, a project from the owners of the popular North Star Spirits independent bottling line. The plans include a distillery, visitor center, and museum.

Dal Riata joins another project called Witchburn, owned by Brave New Spirits. Witchburn is expected to produce make of various peating levels which will be matured in a mixture of American and European oak casks.

Finally, Machrinhanish distillery, from the owners of the newish facility on the Isle of Raasay, is expected to break ground late this year.
