Orkney is apparently getting a third distillery. The archipelago, which lies across the Pentland Firth off the north coast of Scotland, is already home to Highland Park and Scapa, both of them on the main island. Until the advent of Torabhaig on Skye, Mainland Orkney had been the sole Scottish island outside Islay to have more than one distillery.
The new distillery, called Deerness, has been distilling gin on Orkney since 2017 but will now move into whisky distillation as well, with plans for a range of 3 distinct styles: a peated single malt, a whisky made from oats, and finally, a rye. Assuming plans go ahead to begin with whisky production this year, the earliest mature spirit will likely become available around 2026.
